Paris Saint-Germain no longer dependent on Kylian Mbappe

It seemed like the saga would never end, but Kylian Mbappe has finally left Paris Saint-Germain. The best club in France has found itself in a completely new reality, writes The Athletic.
The consequences of Mbappe’s possible departure were already being discussed last year. At that time, it became obvious that PSG had launched the process of transition from the Galacticos era to a more sustainable model. However, it is obvious that PSG can press the “reset” button at any moment, given the resources that the Parisian club has.
A year ago, talk of a change of era was accompanied by rumours about the coach and a significant renewal of the squad. The transition to a “world without stars” was overshadowed by the conflict between the management and Mbappe.
But in the end the season went more or less calmly. Summer is also going without any shocks so far.
The most dramatic situation so far has been PSG’s angry reaction to statements by Lyon owner John Textor, who fell out with Nasser Al-Khelaifi over disagreements over the transfer of television rights.
Many clubs’ managements advocated the creation of a channel that would be entirely owned by Ligue 1, but PSG did not support this proposal.
Textor gave an interview to the Brazilian publication O Globo, in which he stated that PSG is “an example of unrestrained spending without limits.” PSG literally the next day threatened the owner of Lyon with a lawsuit.
That may not be the only intrigue off the pitch. Mbappe has already signed a contract with Real, but PSG are still withholding part of his salary. Kylian and his former club are still negotiating the terms of the agreement that helped him return to the team last summer.
Mbappe’s mother and agent Fayza Lamari spoke about the legal nuances of this situation in an interview with Le Parisien shortly after Kylian’s presentation at Real Madrid.
“Sometimes when you split up, you have to decide who gets the TV, the furniture and the car. It’s the same here. We won’t leave things as they are. But I also want to remember the positives: even this year, when it was very difficult, it was still very nice to play for the club in my hometown,” said Mbappe’s mother.
It is likely that Mbappe and PSG will have to sort things out in court. “If we have no choice, then maybe that’s how it will be. But I hope that the terms of the contract signed two years ago will be respected. In fact, no one can say what happened – neither me nor the PSG representatives. For two years, Kylian and the president always met alone, except for one time. Despite everything, Kylian continued to play even after the February statement,” added Fayza Lamari.
This summer, PSG enters the new season without a major star for the first time since Qatar Sports Investments took over. Naturally, this only increases the influence of Luis Enrique, who led the team to the semi-finals of the Champions League last season.
Unlike previous years, PSG decided to do without a tour of different countries this time. In 2023, the Parisians played several friendly matches in Japan and South Korea.
PSG were scheduled to travel to China this year as part of a brand promotion drive, with a new club store set to open there soon.
However, at the last moment the plans had to be changed. According to some reports, PSG were unhappy with the reputation of the organiser of the trip.
PSG ultimately decided to have a quiet summer, foregoing the opportunity to earn money. Luis Enrique’s team will play friendly matches in Germany against Sturm and Salzburg. It also became known that the French Football League has postponed the Super Cup match against Monaco, originally scheduled for August 8 in Beijing.
This is the first time (apart from the Covid-19 2020) that PSG will not go on tour in preparation for the season. The club came to the conclusion that this is the most sensible option, given that many players already have an excessively heavy workload this summer due to Euro 2024, the Copa America and the Olympic tournament. At once, 16 PSG players played for their national teams. And this does not include those who spent last season on loan at other clubs.
PSG already have new players. In mid-June, the Parisians bought the goalkeeper of the Russian national team Matvey Safonov from Krasnodar. In addition, the team has been joined by defensive midfielder Gabriel Moscardo, who was signed in January but spent the previous six months on loan at Brazilian Corinthians.
Presnesl Kimpembe has finally returned to full training after missing the entire last season due to a complex Achilles injury.
Luis Enrique’s coaching staff has been joined by another assistant – Guillem Hernandez Folguera. He previously worked at the academies of Venezia and Barcelona.
At least eight players will leave PSG before the end of the summer. The club is likely to sell Renato Sanches, Juan Bernat, Colin Dagba, Ismael Garbi, Ilyes Usni and several other young players. It is known that they will continue training separately from the first team.
It is possible that some of them will continue to play for the PSG youth team, which the club plans to create for the upcoming season.
However, it is likely that these are not the only exit transfers. Plus, it is clear that the club is planning to make some serious acquisitions.
First of all, PSG urgently needs an attacking player. Last season Mbappe scored 44 goals – that’s 37 percent of the total. Despite the huge expenses last summer, the Parisian club now also has the means to strengthen the squad.
PSG’s main transfer targets are in Napoli. They are Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. To acquire both the Nigerian and the Georgian, they may have to sell Randal Kolo-Muani, who had a poor season last year. A year ago, the Frenchman moved to the Parisian club from Eintracht for 90 million euros.
PSG is also known to be interested in acquiring 19-year-old Rennes midfielder Desire Douai and one of Bayern’s leaders Joshua Kimmich. Although even without them, Luis Enrique has enough quality players in the midfield. It is enough to recall Vitinho, Warren Zaire-Emery and Fabian Ruiz, who was one of the leaders of the Spanish national team at Euro 2024.
It is likely that PSG will sell Manuel Ugarte, in whose transfer Manchester United are interested.
PSG have been trying to recruit the best young French players for some time now and it was for this reason that they were hoping to sign Leni Yoro, who eventually moved from Lille to Manchester United.
Meanwhile, there is still no clarity about the future of Xavi Simons. PSG does not want to sell the Dutchman in the summer, since in that case PSV Eindhoven will receive part of the funds. Most likely, Simons will go out on loan again.
PSG have entered a full-fledged era without Mbappe. But a clearer picture will emerge next month, once the transfer campaign is over.
