What is the new food labeling?

This measure, which is entering the food market in stages, has the main objective of making the percentages of certain additional ingredients in high percentages more visible.

Among these, we have as an example the sign with a magnifying glass, which must be added to the front of packaging that contains high levels of sugar and fat, for example.

When did Anvisa implement food labeling legislation?

The standards came into force in October 2022, but were published in 2020. This way, companies had 24 months to follow the new guideline and adapt.

Therefore, by October 2023, foods in general must be following the standard. However, those that use returnable packaging will have a longer period, but will also have to comply with the legislation.

What has changed in the new food labeling?

The new rules for labeling food products come to make it as clear as possible which ingredients and substances have a considerable amount of saturated fats, sodium and added sugars. This is because they are associated with the emergence of several diseases, such as obesity, hypertension (high blood pressure) and diabetes, for example.

Furthermore, manufacturers must inform whether or not the product contains lactose or gluten, in order to avoid any reaction or complication for intolerants, allergies or even patients with a condition that can be aggravated by certain types of ingredients. .

What labels have changed? What do they indicate?

In general, the main changes focus on the nutritional table, which now needs to be as legible as possible, with a white background and legible letters as a rule, in addition to the composition that needs to be located close to the table.

And that’s not all! Information on macronutrient content must be reported in quantities of 100g, not more per portion of the product, which makes it easier to compare products.

Furthermore, foods that have a high content of some ingredients must be marked on the front of the packaging with a symbol of a magnifying glass in a black rectangle and the name of the component.

Types of foods to pay attention to

Some foods tend to have a higher percentage of ingredients that are listed in the new labeling rule and that, in excess, are harmful to health, as is the case with processed and ultra-processed foods, for example. Among them are:

Soft drinks; Chocolates; Snacks; Stuffed cookies; With lactose; With gluten; Canned goods; Sausages.

These are some examples of the various products that require special attention when checking the nutritional table and information presented, as well as the new labels used on the front of the packaging.

The new labeling standards seek to make clear what can impact the consumer’s health if consumed in excess, so it is important to always check the main information about the products we are consuming.
