After four years of pro-armament public policies by Jair Bolsonaro (PL), the number of new firearms possession registrations in Brazil decreased by 74% in 2023.

In total, 23.5 thousand applications were made until November 2023. At the same time, a year ago, there were 91.7 thousand. Every day, an average of 71 new registrations are made during the administration of President Lula (PT).

In the previous government, the average was 275 new registrations per day, according to an analysis based on data from the Sinarm (National Weapons System) of the Federal Police, responsible for controlling firearms in the hands of the population. According to the PF, each registry allows one or two weapons per year in the case of civilians, for personal defense with verification of effective need.

For legal entities, the limit depends on the operation of the company. The number of possession registrations in 2023 is also the lowest in the last ten years. The peak occurred in the third year of the Bolsonaro government, in 2021, when, until November, 113 thousand applications were submitted by citizens and companies.
