A new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is being built at the Matilde Hidalgo de Procel Specialized Hospital of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) in Guayaquil to strengthen care for women who present complications during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum.

Maternal ICUs are multidisciplinary hospital care areas aimed at offering medical and technological support to pregnant and postpartum women in three phases: stabilization and resuscitation of the mother-child pair, complete evaluation, and treatment in its different modalities.

Due to the registered cases of preeclampsia, obstetric hemorrhages, puerperal infections, among other serious pathologies, the new construction was planned, the investment cost of $ 1,379,160.66.

It is estimated to serve around 1,500 patients a year. The service will have ten beds; four for critical care, four intermediate care and two isolation. At the moment, the work is 61% complete, its inauguration is scheduled for September of this year.

At the head of this service will be a highly trained medical and nursing team. It will also have advanced medical technology equipment.

With this implementation, the Matilde Hidalgo Hospital hopes to significantly reduce the risk of maternal deaths and thus make an important difference in gynecological-obstetric health care in Guayas and the region.
