Apple is preparing to release a revamped iPad mini featuring an OLED display, a new vibration-based speaker system, improved water resistance, and an A19 Pro chip by late October 2026, with a potential starting price increase bringing it to $699.
The Long-Awaited OLED Display Upgrade
Apple’s compact tablet is expected to receive its biggest display change in years, replacing the current 8.3-inch LCD Liquid Retina screen with an advanced OLED panel. The hardware shift places the compact device alongside Apple’s more premium offerings, which have already adopted the display technology starting with the iPad Pro update in May 2024.
The move to an OLED panel brings distinct technical advantages. According to industry reporting, the new screen delivers deeper blacks, stronger contrast, and richer colours. For an entertainment device frequently used for gaming, streaming videos, reading, and web browsing, the updated panel also supports better high-dynamic-range performance and potential battery efficiency gains. However, supply chain indicators suggest Apple will not increase the tablet’s refresh rate, leaving it at up to 60Hz rather than the 120Hz ProMotion standard found on Pro models.
Processor Improvements and Apple Intelligence
Under the hood, the upcoming tablet iteration—tracked under codenames J510 and J511—will house a significant processing upgrade. While the current hardware generation runs on the A17 Pro chip introduced in October 2024, the next model is expected to feature either an A19 Pro or A20 chip.
The current generation’s processor already enables Apple’s artificial intelligence suite, but stepping up to the A19 Pro delivers faster performance with stronger processing power. This boost targets demanding tasks such as photo and video editing, while ensuring that games and AI-driven workflows operate with smoother execution.
Redesigned Speakers and Water Resistance
Beyond the screen and silicon, the hardware revision introduces structural modifications aimed at durability and audio delivery. Reports indicate that Apple plans to integrate a new vibration-based speaker system alongside improved water resistance.
The redesign of the acoustic architecture serves a dual engineering purpose. By reducing reliance on traditional physical speaker openings in the chassis, engineers can better protect internal components against liquid ingress, elevating the device’s overall resilience.
Pricing Pressures and Launch Timeline
Because OLED components carry higher manufacturing costs than conventional LCD panels, analysts anticipate a price adjustment for the upcoming release. The hardware refresh could cost $100 more than the current model, pushing the starting retail price to $699.
Timing points to a fall release window. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that the revamped tablet is on track to arrive by the end of October, following the expected September rollout of the iPhone 18 Pro series.
Broader Hardware Refresh Context
The autumn product cycle positions the compact tablet as part of a much larger hardware overhaul across Apple’s device ecosystem. Alongside the compact tablet refresh, the company is preparing new Mac computers, Apple Watches, and AirPods, alongside developments for its foldable device lineup.
Further out on the product roadmap, Apple is also developing a new Mac mini, M6-powered Macs, and an entry-level base iPad slated for early 2027 that aims to bring Apple Intelligence to the most affordable tier of the company’s tablet lineup.
