Interview between the Time.news Editor and Music Industry Expert
Time.news Editor: Welcome, everyone! Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Leo Zhang, an expert in the music industry, particularly in K-pop and its growing influence in Japan. We’re here to discuss the recent recognition of the group NewJeans at the Japan Record Awards. Thank you for joining us, Dr. Zhang!
Dr. Leo Zhang: Thank you for having me! It’s always exciting to discuss the impact of K-pop globally, especially in Japan.
Editor: Absolutely! NewJeans has recently won the Excellence Award for their hit song “Supernatural” at the Japan Record Awards, marking the second consecutive year they’ve been recognized. What do you think makes their music resonate so well with Japanese audiences?
Dr. Zhang: NewJeans has a unique blend of catchy melodies, relatable lyrics, and modern production that appeals to a wide range of listeners. “Supernatural,” in particular, highlights their artistry and originality, qualities that the Japan Record Awards prioritize. Additionally, their visuals and performance style cater well to the Japanese market, which appreciates strong presentation.
Editor: That’s an interesting point! They’re the only foreign artist to receive an Outstanding Work Award this year. How significant is it for a K-pop group to achieve such recognition in Japan?
Dr. Zhang: It’s monumental! Japan has long been a competitive music market, traditionally dominated by local artists. NewJeans’ achievement is a testament to their universal appeal and the growing acceptance of K-pop in Japan. This sets a precedent and could pave the way for more K-pop groups to gain similar recognition and success in the Japanese market.
Editor: Speaking of success, they’ve made history by selling more than 1.26 million copies of their Japanese debut single and recently sold out the Tokyo Dome in record time. What do you think contributes to these impressive sales figures?
Dr. Zhang: Their sales speak to both their popularity and the dedicated fan base they’ve cultivated. Their strategic marketing, high-quality music, and strong connection with fans through social media and live performances have created a sense of community. Additionally, the fact that their first single topped the Oricon charts upon release is particularly telling of their standing in the industry.
Editor: They’ll also be featured in major end-of-year broadcasts like Nippon TV’s “Best Artist 2024” and will be the first K-pop girl group to perform at Japan’s largest year-end festival, “COUNTDOWN JAPAN 24/25.” What impact do you foresee these performances having on their career trajectory?
Dr. Zhang: These performances will significantly boost their visibility and solidify their status as a leading act in the industry. Such platforms allow them to reach not only their current fans but also potential new listeners. It’s crucial for artists, especially those from overseas, to consistently engage with their audience through high-profile events.
Editor: With the live broadcast of the Japan Record Awards happening on December 30th, do you think NewJeans has a strong chance to win the grand prize?
Dr. Zhang: I believe they do! Being nominated alongside other excellent works and their track record of success gives them a competitive edge. If they maintain their momentum and continue to connect with listeners, they very well may take home the grand prize, which would further establish their dominance in the market.
Editor: Thank you, Dr. Zhang, for shedding light on NewJeans’ remarkable accomplishments and what they mean for the future of K-pop in Japan. It seems we’re witnessing a significant evolution in the music landscape.
Dr. Zhang: It’s been a pleasure discussing this, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for NewJeans and the K-pop industry as a whole!
Editor: And to our viewers, stay tuned for more exciting updates as we follow NewJeans’ journey in the upcoming awards season!
