New Bus Stand Opened in Chennai to Ease Traffic Congestion

The bustling city of Chennai has long grappled with the issue of traffic congestion, especially in areas like Koyambedu and its suburbs. To tackle this problem, the construction of a new bus stand between Vandalur and Oorpakkam at Klambach was initiated in 2019. Fast forward to today, the construction work has been completed, and the newly minted bus stand, named the Kalayan Centenary Bus Terminal, was opened for public use on the 30th of the month.

Spanning an area of 88 acres, the construction of the bus stand cost around 397 crore rupees. The inauguration was carried out by Chief Minister Stalin, marking a significant milestone for the city’s public transportation infrastructure.

The Clambakkam Bus Stand is designed to accommodate a whopping 2,310 buses in a single day. But it doesn’t stop there – the bus station is also equipped with various amenities such as a nursing room for mothers, a rest room for drivers and conductors, medical facilities, battery cars for the disabled and elderly, as well as 2 escalators and 6 lifts.

It has been announced that all buses plying from Chennai to the southern districts will now depart from the Clambakkam bus station. This will also include private omni buses bound for the southern districts. Consequently, passengers traveling to Koyambedu from the southern districts will need to make their way to Klambakkam, from where they can catch a city bus to reach Koyambedu. However, it has been assured that buses will continue to operate from the Koyambedu bus station as usual.

The opening of the Clambakkam bus station aims to alleviate the traffic congestion in Koyambedu and its surrounding areas. As a result, passengers who have already made reservations to travel to the southern districts by government express buses until the 30th of next month from Koyambedu and Tambaram have been advised to utilize the services from the Klambakkam bus station. To further facilitate the transition, it has been announced that the fare from Koyambedu to Klambakkam will be reimbursed to the passenger’s bank account.

The completion and opening of the new bus stand marks a significant step forward in addressing the perennial issue of traffic congestion in Chennai. It is hoped that the new facility will help to streamline the city’s public transportation network and improve the commuting experience for residents and visitors alike.
