San Salvador. The Navigation Law approved yesterday by the Legislative Assembly updates the legal framework of public administration related to the regulation and control of maritime and port activities.

The National Navy will be in charge of the supervision, control, development, surveillance and defense of sovereignty and jurisdiction in the maritime territory and continental waters of the country, in accordance with the approved legislation.

The deputies who promoted this legislation pointed out that it seeks to solve many gaps that currently exist to guarantee the protection of Salvadorans at maritime level, which will only be achieved through the modernization of the State.

“With this law we are granting the National Navy authority over the waters. For many years they were not provided with the legal tools to protect that area”, justified the representative Rubén Flores.

For her part, Deputy Norma Lobo indicated that the regulations will allow “restoring order on the high seas”, because this is also part of the territory and complemented that this guarantees that the relevant institutions carry out their tasks with the sole purpose of benefiting the population.
