New minimum wage starts to be paid this Thursday
Workers will begin receiving the official minimum wage of R$1,412 from this Thursday, February 1st. The new value corresponds to an increase of 6.97%, or R$92, compared to the previous value, which was R$1,320.
The increase of almost 7% represents a real gain (above inflation) of 3%, in addition to the 3.85% inflation recorded in the period.
The appreciation above inflation was included in a provisional measure sent by the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in May to Congress, which approved it in August. The new value was then included in the budget law for 2024, approved by parliament on December 22nd. Lula then signed the decree on December 27th.
The Inter-Union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies (Dieese) estimates that 59.3 million people have income referenced to the minimum wage, which will result in an increase in annual income in the amount of R$69.9 billion.
Furthermore, the entity also estimated a R$37.7 billion increase in annual tax collection on consumption, as an impact of this minimum adjustment.
Understand the minimum wage correction
The new minimum valuation policy – which resumed real corrections, that is, above inflation – foresees the readjustment by the National Consumer Price Index (INPC), accumulated in the 12-month period up to November, plus GDP growth of two years earlier.
In the case of 2024, the formula takes into account the INPC of 3.85% and the GDP of 2022, which grew 3%, according to values revised by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
The policy of real minimum value appreciation was in force in the country between 2011 and 2019, but wages did not always rise above inflation. In 2017 and 2018, for example, the adjustment was granted only based on the inflation index, because GDP in previous years (2015 and 2016) shrank.
