A new version of the cranberry virus is spreading rapidly. It is much more contagious and, in the worst case, it could spread worldwide.
Kinshasa – There was a stir because of the monkeypox outbreak in the USA in the summer of 2022. Some even feared another pandemic, which fortunately did not come true. However, a newer version of the monkeypox virus (Mpox virus) is currently circulating and can be transmitted much more easily from person to person. Although the new strain has not yet been classified as a pandemic, the development is “worrying” according to experts.
Experts warn of new Mpox virus – it’s spreading fast and it’s deadlier
The new Mpox Clade Ib variant is currently spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo and has already reached the border of Rwanda. The rapid spread is due, among other things, to the fact that this type of virus can be transmitted from person to person outside the family without personal contact.
This is in contrast to the Clade IIb variant, which is mainly transmitted through sexual contact – especially between two men. Clade Ib also has a higher mortality rate. While 99.9 percent of those infected with clade IIb survive, in some clade Ib outbreaks up to ten percent of those infected die, the American reports Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

If the outbreak in the USA had been covered by Ib, in the worst case 3,200 of the 32,000 infected people would have died. Since it was IIb, the number of deaths was much lower. 58 people died.
New chicken pox variant spreads in “anxious way” – The symptoms
Researchers are particularly concerned that the new version is spreading in such a “disturbing” way, according to a report from Insider Business according to. It is “undoubtedly the most dangerous of all known strains of Mpox,” reports the news portal John Claude Udahemuka, a lecturer at the University of Rwanda.
Since the new virus spreads, among other things, through skin contact with infected people, it could spread quickly around the world via airplanes. Any Mpox infection manifests itself through the following symptoms:
- fever,
- Headache
- Muscle and back pain
- Swollen lymph nodes
- A skin rash in the form of spots or pustules that shrivel and fall off over time

“Anyone with symptoms that could be Mpox should therefore avoid close physical contact and seek immediate medical attention,” advises Robert Koch Institute (RKI). In addition to that alone Vaccination against monkeypox is even recommended for some people. (sp)
