It is expected that a large number of pro-Myung (pro-Lee Jae-myung) members of the Democratic Party of Korea will enter the National Assembly in the April 10 general election. In particular, in the nomination phase, there is a growing possibility that many of Representative Lee Jae-myung’s special assistants (special advisors), including the ‘Daejang-dong lawyer’, as well as active members of the leadership who emerged as a ‘new pro-Myung’ group, will receive gold badges.

● ‘New pro-myeong’ group that has raised its weight class

Among active lawmakers, candidate Park Chan-dae (Yeonsugap, Incheon), the top member, candidate Kim Byeong-ki (Dongjak-gap, Seoul), the senior vice president, and candidate Kim Seong-hwan (Nowon-eul, Seoul), who was the secretary of the talent committee, are aiming to win the title of ‘3rd term in the metropolitan area’. As of 1:30 a.m. on the 11th, candidates Park and Kim Seong-hwan were elected with 52.4% and 57.5% of the votes, respectively. Candidate Kim Byeong-ki (49.0%) also appears to have a high possibility of winning, ahead of People Power Party candidate Jang Jin-young (46.5%) by 2.5 percentage points.

The three have established themselves as representative core members of the pro-Myung faction through the nomination phase of this general election. This is the so-called ‘new name’ group, which is distinct from the ‘Council of 7’, which was considered Representative Lee’s closest associates even before the last presidential election. Candidate Park has helped Representative Lee since the beginning of the last presidential election campaign, and has maintained a close relationship, being the only member of the Supreme Council to attend private meetings chaired by Representative Lee during the nomination period. He served as the chairman of the party’s prosecution committee for oppression of authoritarian politics and poured out hard-line messages toward the prosecution.

Candidate Kim Byeong-gi served as the party’s senior vice president and led the practical work of nominations, including verification of active members. Candidate Kim also communicated directly with Representative Lee in every major situation, solidifying his trusting relationship with Representative Lee. When the motion to arrest Representative Lee was passed at the plenary session of the National Assembly in September last year, he strongly criticized the members of the Non-Lee Jae-myeong faction, saying, “This is the day when Democratic Party members became dogs.” Candidate Kim Seong-hwan, a member of the Lee Hae-chan faction, is also evaluated as having contributed to the general election victory by serving as secretary of the Talent Committee and searching for talent to recruit for the general election.

● Possibility of ‘Daejangdong Five’ entering the hospital bloodlessly

Representative Lee’s Daejang-dong lawyer and Lee’s special advisors, who won nominations amid the controversy over ‘assassin candidacy’ targeting non-representative incumbent lawmakers, are also likely to enter the National Assembly.

As of 1:30 am on this day, all five Daejang-dong lawyers were confirmed to enter the National Assembly. Daejang-dong lawyers who ran in the Democratic Party’s stronghold, such as Park Gyun-taek (Gwangju Gwangsan-gap) and Yang Bun-nam (Gwangju Seo-eul), confirmed their victory early on.

Despite past controversy over defense of sex offenders, candidate Lee Geon-tae (Gyeonggi Province, Bucheon County), who advanced to the finals by beating incumbent lawmaker Kim Sang-hee (4th term) in the primary, is certain to win with 53.0% of the votes. Candidate Kim Ki-pyo (Bucheon, Gyeonggi-do, 55.8%), who sparked controversy over so-called ‘young speculation’ by receiving a loan worth 5 billion won and investing in a shopping mall, also comfortably ahead of People Power Party candidate Park Seong-jung (38.2%). Candidate Kim Dong-ah (Seoul Seodaemun Gap, 49.0%), who was eliminated in fourth place during the party’s open primary but was later given the opportunity to compete, causing controversy over ‘preferential relief’, also solidified his victory. In addition, special advisers who are not lawyers from Daejang-dong, such as candidate Jeong Jin-wook (Gwangju Dong-Nam-gap) and Kim Moon-soo (Jeonnam Suncheon-Gwangyang-Gokseong-Gurye-gap), were confirmed to enter the 22nd National Assembly.

A Democratic Party official said, “Including Shin Myeong-gye, Daejang-dong lawyers and special advisors all have hard-line tendencies, including ‘prosecution reform’ and ‘overthrowing the Yoon Seok-yeol regime’,” and “Draehoehoe, a group of first-time hardliners elected during the 21st National Assembly,” said. He predicted, “There is a high possibility that a ‘Daejang-dong 5 Musketeers’ gathering that surpasses the ‘Daejang-dong 5 Musketeers’ group will be born.”

Among Representative Lee’s special advisors, Candidate Song Ki-ho (Seoul Songpa-eul), the only one running in a difficult district where the People Power Party is active, received 40.7% of the votes and lost to People Power Party candidate Bae Hyun-jin (59.3%).
