Puente continues its efforts to combat chronic malnutrition with the inauguration of new Nútreme Centers. These places will provide care to boys and girls, pregnant mothers and lactating women in different communities of the municipality of Santa María Cahabón, Alta Verapaz.

The construction of these establishments was achieved thanks to the support of thousands of Guatemalans who came together for McDía Feliz 2023. How Chilean!

With its work to address the chronic malnutrition in Guatemala, Puente ha inaugurated 14 new Nútreme Centers in different communities of the municipality of Santa María Cahabón. These facilities represent an important step in the organization’s mission to prevent this condition through a community educational program focused on comprehensive child development.

These centers are designed to provide care to pregnant and lactating mothers and children under 4 years of age. Its construction is the result of a joint effort between Puente and local community authorities, which made it possible to identify the appropriate spaces for its installation. Those that have already been inaugurated are located in Santa Rosa Chivité, Santa María Rubeltzul, Tzalamtún, Santa Cristina, Pinares, Balamté and Tamax.

Fighting child malnutrition with the help of Guatemalans

The support received through the Happy McDía 2023 initiative has been essential for the construction and equipment of these 14 new centers, thus expanding care to more communities in the municipality. During the first week of April 2024, nine of the fourteen that will be built were inaugurated, marking an important step in the fight against child malnutrition in Guatemala.

With its opening, it is estimated that more than 600 boys, girls and mother educators will be served, impacting and benefiting almost 2,000 people in total in the municipality.

About the program

The Puente Nútreme Centers program is the result of the combination of two fundamental components: the Accompáñame a Crecer program of the Ministry of Education – Mineduc -, which offers initial care and education from pregnancy to 4 years of life, and the intervention component comprehensive community and family, which includes learning practices to improve hygiene conditions at home, knowledge of budget management and savings practices, and agricultural activities.

A key aspect of the program is the strengthening of the skills of the Volunteer Educators, who share knowledge with mothers so that they can implement it in their homes. In addition to the municipality of Alta Verapaz, the program has a presence in 17 communities in San José Poaquil, Chimaltenango.
