The second edition should work. The new Mercedes AMG, with a sharper design and true high-tech equipment, should finally seriously endanger the Porsche 911. The new sports car from Affalterbach celebrates its world premiere at the Monterey Car Week.

The shadows of the overpowering For six decades, Porsche 911s have been endlessly long and their tracks wide. But in its second generation, the Mercedes AMG GT is more serious than ever. Similar to the 911, the design is a further development of the predecessor, with the new generation becoming more delicate and elegant. But the real show is under the chic sheet metal dress, because this is where the bolide from Affalterbach goes on a general attack. There are known for driving fun without limits, among other things, V8 power, all-wheel drive, roll stabilization and rear-wheel steering. Together with the sharper design and a notable increase in quality of stay inside, this should mean that the AMG GT not only rumbles in the rear-view mirror of the 911, but can also overtake the Zuffenhausener.

Not only the turbocharged four-liter V8 should ensure that, but similar to the main competitor now also two emergency seats in the admittedly more than narrow rear. But if it is absolutely necessary, one or two children up to a height of 1.50 meters can sit behind the leather sports chairs for the driver and front passenger. However, it is better to choose a different vehicle for transporting the younger generation and use the additional space in the second row for jackets, bags and other items. On the other hand, the advantage is greater if the two rear seats are folded down and the cargo space is increased significantly. Practical: the large tailgate with extendable or fixed spoiler opens and closes electrically at the touch of a button. The interior shows the relationship to the open Mercedes AMG SL, because the closed GT also offers animated instruments, an 11.9-inch touchscreen in the center console and a head-up display only on request. In addition, the customer can choose between normal sports seats and an even more strongly contoured performance seat.

The Mercedes AMG GT Coupé is offered either as a 63 or 55 – each with all-wheel drive. The top model is the AMG GT 63 4matic, which delivers 430 kW / 585 hp / 800 Nm and has a maximum speed of 315 km/h until the sharpened variants are presented and certainly also a corresponding Black Series model. Behind him is the AMG GT 55 4matic, whose four-liter V8 delivers 350 kW / 476 hp / 700 Nm. From a standing start, the two sports cars accelerate to 100 km/h in 3.2 and 3.9 seconds respectively. The standard fuel consumption of both sports cars is an impressive 14.1 liters Super per 100 kilometers and thus significantly more than the direct competitor from Zuffenhausen. The ample engine power is transmitted to both axles with the 20/21-inch wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission with a wet starting clutch instead of the usual torque converter. Depending on the selected driving program and situation, power distribution varies between 50:50 and 0:100 percent in favor of the rear axle. Quite surprising: an electrified version will not be offered, at least at the market launch, similar to the SL with an identical engine.

At the front, the chassis consists of a multi-link axle with five links, which are arranged completely inside the rim. A five-link axle also works on the two wheels on the rear axle. Not only the electronic dampers ensure minimal body movements, but also a new roll stabilization system with active hydraulic elements instead of the previous torsion bar stabilizers. The electronic locking differential and the standard rear-axle steering of the AMG GT bring even more high-tech. Then the competition with the Porsche 911 can come.
