Bad news for Germans: The price of sandwiches could become significantly higher. This is due to the spread, for which record prices could be paid.
According to the Bavarian Milk Producers’ Association, butter in German retail could become more expensive than it has been for a long time by Christmas. The managing director of the Bavarian Milk Producers’ Association, Hans-Jürgen Seufferlein, told the “Mitteldeutsche Zeitung” (Monday edition) with regard to the current price of 2.09 euros for 250 grams of branded butter in discount stores and supermarkets: “That will certainly not be the end. We will probably see new record prices by the end of the year.”
According to the “Mitteldeutsche Zeitung”, the previous record for the price of butter was reached in autumn 2022 at 2.29 euros. By August 2023, it had fallen to 1.39 euros – and has been rising again since then. Seufferlein cited a decline in production as the reason for the increase: numerous farms have given up dairy farming. At the same time, demand is currently increasing.
