New Research Links Adult ADHD to Higher Risk of Dementia – What You Need to Know

by time news

New research has shown that adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may have a higher risk of developing dementia. The study, published in JAMA Network Open, found that being diagnosed with ADHD as an adult is associated with a 2.77-fold increased risk of dementia. However, the study only showed an association and did not determine whether ADHD directly causes cognitive decline. Treatment with psychostimulant medications, such as Ritalin or Adderall, may help attenuate the risk, according to the researchers. Other lifestyle changes, such as better sleep and staying socially engaged, can also lower the risk of dementia. More research is needed to further understand the link between adult ADHD and dementia, as well as to develop effective prevention and treatment strategies.
