New Research on Gargling with Salt Water and Rinsing Nasal Passages for Covid-19

by time news

Gargling with salt water and rinsing nasal passages could help alleviate COVID-19 symptoms, according to new research. The study tracked 55 adults with COVID who used saline to gargle and rinse their nasal passages four times a day for 14 days. Results showed that those who gargled had significantly lower hospitalization rates compared to those who didn’t. The researchers believe this simple and affordable remedy could ease symptoms and help keep people out of the hospital.

However, infectious disease experts stress that this should not be a substitute for vaccination or treatment with medications. The findings have yet to be published in a peer-reviewed medical journal, and experts recommend more research in larger patient populations. Additionally, people with chronic hypertension are advised against using a salt water gargle as it can inadvertently raise blood pressure.

The study has sparked a discussion on the best way to gargle and nasal rinse, with health experts recommending using sterile saline solution or boiling water at home and letting it cool. However, more evidence is needed before this practice is recommended to treat or prevent COVID-19.
