The new month brings financial benefits for homeowners and students. Some taxpayers, however, should hurry up. An overview.

A lot of things will be different again in August – for example for landlords, PayPal users, students and train passengers. And if you haven’t declared your taxes yet, you shouldn’t waste any time. We have summarized the most important changes for you.

From August 31, landlords of single-family homes can also apply for grants from the KfW development bank to replace a heating system. The same applies to owners who own an apartment in a homeowners’ association that they use themselves or rent out and who would like to replace the heating in their own apartment.

Up to 70 percent of the eligible costs for the purchase and installation of a new climate-friendly heating system are subsidized. For single-family homes, the KfW takes into account costs of up to 30,000 euros; for apartments in multi-family houses, the KfW also takes into account 30,000 euros for the first residential unit, 15,000 euros for the second to sixth units, and 8,000 euros for the seventh apartment and above.

The 70 percent subsidy is only available to those who receive several bonus subsidies in addition to the basic subsidy of 30 percent. For example, owner-occupiers can receive a speed bonus of 20 percent if they replace their functioning oil, coal, gas floor heating, night storage heating or their gas heating or biomass heating that is at least 20 years old.

On August 31, Galeria will be closing at several locations: the department store chain Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof is closing nine of its 92 branches at locations where rents are too high. This is part of the restructuring plan in the insolvency proceedings, which will be concluded with this. On August 1, the new owners, the US investment company NRDC and the investment company of the entrepreneur Bernd Beetz, will also take over.

The following locations will soon no longer exist:

For example, anyone who owns a PV system with an installed capacity of ten kilowatts and uses some of the electricity themselves and feeds some into the grid will receive 8.11 cents per kilowatt hour until July 31.

Anyone who is required to file an income tax return and has not yet done so should take action in August. The deadline officially ends on August 31, 2024. However, there is a special feature this year: Since the date falls on a Saturday, the filing deadline is postponed to the next working day: September 2. Read here how you can easily do your tax return yourself.

If you need a little more time, there is a “trick”: get help from a tax advisor or tax assistance association. Then the deadline for filing your tax return is pushed back significantly: your tax return does not have to be submitted to the tax office until June 2, 2025. Things are even more relaxed if you declare your taxes voluntarily. Then you have until New Year’s Eve 2027 to file your 2023 tax return.

The payment service Paypal is making changes to the login process in the app. Those who authorize transfers may also notice a difference. This is because two-factor authentication is to be standardized for all users.

By the end of August, everyone should be able to authenticate themselves with the PayPal app itself or with WhatsApp in addition to the password. So far, this has only been possible for some users with the authenticator or passkey. In addition, the PayPal app should be able to remember browsers and devices in the future, so that two-factor authentication is no longer necessary for every login.
