From today, August 13, when calculating cash unemployment benefits (POB) of citizens with acquired insurance experience in another member state of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland, income during the last job and all income for the last 24 calendar months, preceding the month of termination of their insurance, regardless of whether they were active in Bulgaria or not. This is reported by the National Social Security Institute (NSI) in connection with the changes in the Social Security Code adopted in the second reading.

This new calculation order is applied only when, as of August 13, 2024, monetary compensation for unemployment has not been granted, regardless of the date of termination of insurance and the date of submission by the person of an application for the granting of monetary compensation, the department explains.

The granted cash benefits for unemployment to citizens with insurance experience acquired under the legislation of a country with which the European regulations for the coordination of social security systems are applied continue to be paid in the specified amounts and term, also specified by the National Institute of Social Security.

“With the changes in the Social Security Code, the parliament introduced justice and an opportunity to reduce abuses in the granting of unemployment benefits, as well as to create the same conditions for calculating this type of compensation for all Bulgarian citizens,” the department commented.

The amendments were adopted by the 50th National Assembly on August 2. The MPs also voted for the international agreements in the field of state social security, for the National Insurance Institute to implement the European regulations for the coordination of social security systems.
