The new school year in Ukraine opened today (Thursday) in the shadow of the not yet ended war which will soon mark half a year from the day it broke out. Many schools operate in shelters, some have been completely emptied and some have opened with a relatively small amount compared to previous years. And there are schools that operate in an area without a protected area and have switched to a distance learning format, just like it was during the Corona period.

The opening of the year opened with the official ceremony of “the first bell”, to which the students and their parents flocked, in prayer and hope for a calmer and safer school year than the past year. The Ukrainian holiday of the opening of the school year was marked this morning with mixed feelings in the shadow of the incessant war.

The rabbis of the communities and Chabad emissaries in Ukraine, with great efforts, opened the ‘Chabad Or Avner’ schools in the cities: Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Odessa, Dnipro, Vinnytsia, Byla Tserkva, Chernivtsi, Kaminskyi, Kariboi-Rog, Tser ‘Rakasi and more.

“This morning we opened a new academic year for the twentieth time in a row,” said the rabbi of the community and the Chabad emissary in the city of Cherkasy, “despite the situation, we also opened a new first grade and the children are excited.” A safe place will be arranged near the school, due to the situation.”

The committee of Chabad emissaries in Ukraine states that “a supreme effort will be made by all the rabbis and emissaries to open the schools, despite the war and the complex security challenge. For over thirty years, the Or Avner Chabad educational institutions have raised and are raising generations of Jewish children in Ukraine. It is the roots for the continuity of the generations.”
