Jaundice is a very dangerous thing for newborns. Scientists have discovered a new technology that can detect this disease with a cell phone processor, which can be detected by various experiments. This processor, called neoSCB, was developed by physicians and engineers at University College London. This processor was used to test for jaundice in more than 300 newborns in Ghana. An initial test study was conducted on 37 newborns in 2020 at University College London (UCLH).
Does the newborn have symptoms of jaundice? To find out, the medical team examined photos taken with a smartphone camera to calculate the yellow color of the white area of the eye (sclera). The doctors found a positive result. That is, in a study published in the journal Pediatrics, the researchers said that a neoSCP processor could give an early diagnosis of neonatal jaundice that requires treatment.
Of the 336 babies tested by the processor, 79 newborns were diagnosed with jaundice. Also, 74 of them have been correctly identified by the processor. Physicians and researchers say this is consistent with the most accurate results available with the most common routine screening method. Jaundice testing is common in newborns. If the white skin near the eyes is yellow after the baby is born, it is mandatory to check. Even small delays can lead to big consequences.
