Brussels. The ambassadors of the member states that make up the European Council have agreed on the negotiation mandate necessary for the digitization of Schengen visas. Thus, the Council will be able to start negotiations on the final legal text with the European Parliament on the transition to the digital Schengen visa.

The proposal of the EU Commission for the digitization of visas in April 2022 envisages the digital issuance of Schengen visas currently affixed to passports.

If the proposal becomes law, Schengen visa applications will also be made digitally online. For this, a “visa application platform” will be established. All documents will be uploaded digitally on this website, and visa fees will be paid on this website.

Only first-time applicants, those who will renew their biometric information and new passport holders will go to consulates or visa centers.

Visas will be delivered to the applicant in digital format, in the form of a 2D barcode and signed in an encrypted form.

With digital visas, the EU aims to prevent fraud and the use of stolen visas.

The bill on the digitization of Schengen visas was approved by the relevant committee of the European Parliament. It is expected that the final form of the legal text will be given after the deliberations of the Council and the Parliament. (yenivatan.at)
