New strain of coronavirus “omicron” may displace “delta” – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

The new strain SARS-CoV-2 (omicron) is likely to supplant the delta variant. Due to the numerous mutations in the S-protein, the spread of the virus increases, explained Alexander Gintsburg, director of the Gamaleya Research Center for Electrochemistry.

The scientist did not rule out a long incubation period when this strain enters the body. From the moment of human infection until the development of severe complications, 12-14 days will pass.

“If those vaccines that are now widely used will act against this strain, then perhaps this can be equated with salvation,” TASS quotes Gintsburg.

Earlier, the chief researcher at the Gamaleya Center, Anatoly Altstein, did not rule out that, thanks to the omicron, COVID-19 could become a common cold infection. “There is a hope that those infected with the new strain will have fewer dangerous complications and deaths,” the doctor of medical sciences emphasized.
