Medical Clinic II in Fulda Offers New Study for Patients with Ulcerative Colitis

Fulda, 23.11.2023 – Ulcerative colitis, a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), affects over 200,000 mostly young patients in Germany. The Medical Clinic II in Fulda is now offering a new treatment option for those affected through the FRESCO study, which aims to provide a therapy with few side effects.

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease characterized by pathological changes in the microbiota of the intestine. Current therapeutic measures, including conventional medications, immunosuppressants, and biologics, are not always sufficient to control disease activity in the long term, highlighting the need for new therapies with fewer side effects.

Prof. Dr. Carsten Schmidt, Director of the Medical Clinic II (Gastroenterology) at the Fulda Clinic, explains that the FRESCO study involves treating patients with ulcerative colitis with encapsulated stool or the supernatant of intestinal bacteria, a new concept for endoscopic stool transfer that has already shown promise in previous studies. The study aims to investigate the effectiveness and safety of fecal microbiota transfer in capsule form for treating people with mild to moderate ulcerative colitis.

“We are looking for affected patients who would like to take part in the FRESCO study,” says Professor Schmidt. The study is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study that allows for treatment with this new therapeutic option. Participants in the study will be required to visit the clinic approximately four to five times over a 24-week period, with a preliminary examination before the start of treatment and a follow-up visit after the end of the study.

The study is open to people with mild to moderately active ulcerative colitis between the ages of 18 and 75, with exclusions for patients with Crohn’s disease, those who have already undergone colon surgery, or have been diagnosed with cancer in the last three years. Interested patients can contact the study office through email at [email protected] or by phone at 0661-84-5448.

This new study offers hope for those suffering from ulcerative colitis by providing a potentially effective and safe treatment option with few side effects.
