A new international study has shed light on the significant impact of certain foods on cancer risk. Experts have long recognized the link between diet and cancer, and this latest research brings further insights into the specific eating habits that can increase the likelihood of developing certain types of tumors.

The study, published in the renowned journal The Lancet, analyzed the data of nearly 200,000 individuals from Great Britain. Participants, aged between 49 and 69, had their diets meticulously recorded between 2009 and 2012. Over an average follow-up period of 9.8 years, 15,921 individuals were diagnosed with cancer, and 4,009 sadly succumbed to the disease, providing the researchers with crucial information about the impact of nutrition.

Of particular concern were highly processed foods, which constituted nearly 23 percent of the participants’ total food intake on average. The study found that for every 10 percent increase in consumption of highly processed products, the overall risk of cancer rose by two percent. The death rate also increased by a worrying six percentage points. However, the researchers identified even higher risks for specific types of cancer, including ovarian and breast cancer.

In cases of ovarian cancer, a 10 percent increase in the consumption of highly processed foods led to a staggering 19 percent increase in the risk of developing the disease. Additionally, the death rate rose by 30 percent in these cases. Similarly, for breast cancer, a 10 percent increase in consumption of highly processed foods resulted in a 16 percent higher death rate. The study also found that individuals with the highest consumption of highly processed foods had the highest risk of brain tumors.

The German Nutrition Society defines highly processed foods as “ready-to-eat products that are produced by combining food-based or synthetic ingredients.” Examples of such foods include fruit yogurt or cereals with added sugar and additives, packaged bread, soft drinks, salty or fried snacks, sweets, ready meals, and processed meats such as sausages.

It’s important to note that Stiftung Warentest, a well-known German consumer organization, recently warned about certain male supplements that may also affect cancer risk.
