For a month, in December of last year, the traffic lights on ‘Circunvalación’ avenue were out of service, causing a series of crashes due to their deficiency: the majority of accidents, according to drivers, were for this reason. New traffic lights?
Situation. In the same way, in the Licán sector, the residents requested them assuming that this generates a lot of accidents, and at that same time it was learned that a traffic light station would be acquired; However, that project did not take place, and this was also confirmed by Christian Gavilanes, director of Mobility for the Municipality.
Namely. Regarding this difficulty, Gavilanes explained that it was due to the fact that in the city there are “several types of traffic lights, some analog and others acquired at the end of the administration, those that are digital, and the coexistence of the two are generating this conflict; there is no dynamic coordination”.
Places. And this is evident in several sectors, such as the San Alfonso market or the Polytechnic market, where the traffic lights do not work. There is also another cause: crashes against traffic light poles; in the previous administration they indicated that it was a difficulty with the Prosecutor’s Office, that it took time to do the expert reports and they could not intervene, and this happened with the traffic light of Orozco and Carabobo, which was affected by a crash and that took at least a month in fixing it.
Points. These are the zones in the city; however, the National Transit Agency (ANT) has identified the so-called ‘black spots’, especially on interstate roads. This deficiency, according to Gavilanes, would be the cause of the accidents, in addition to the fact that they have not received accurate data on the places where the most accidents are recorded.
Competence. Although all the traffic lights are not the responsibility of the Mobility Directorate, many others are the responsibility of the Ministry of Transport and Public Works (MTOP).
Solutions? Due to the inharmony that exists between the devices, it is possible to start with “a process of renewing the traffic lights that have already completed their useful life”, and for this purpose they have requested a cadastre, and with that information start with the proper renewal or improvement of the semaphoric central in the points of the city.
