New wave of illegal Algerian migrants on the Spanish coast: interception of more than 300 people in 48 hours
Madrid – Algerian illegal immigration to the Spanish coast is growing. Spanish authorities announced on Tuesday the interception of 311 individuals of Algerian origin on the coasts of the Balearic Islands and Murcia in the last 48 hours.
The coasts of the Balearic Islands have been the target of the largest number of Algerian illegal migrants, with the arrival of 268 people on board 17 inflatable boats, local authorities and rescue services said.
Of this total, 106 were intercepted in Formentera, 111 in Cabrera, 32 in Mallorca and 19 in Ibiza, the same sources said.
In Murcia, emergency services intercepted three other inflatable boats with 43 illegal Algerian migrants on board.
The authorities have deplored the death of an illegal immigrant upon arrival in Almeria.
According to the count of the Spanish local authorities, 73% (4,005) of the irregular migrants who reached the peninsula and the Balearic Islands during the first half of the current year were Algerians.
