(ANSA) – FERMO, 03 AUG – Fermo hospital at the forefront with the new wireless pacemaker. On July 25, the first implant of a new model of wireless pacemaker was successfully performed at Murri hospital, completely inside the heart, equipped with a battery that lasts over 15 years, but smaller than a mini-AA battery.
The surgery was performed by the Cardiology Department directed by Maria Vittoria Paci and with the supervision and collaboration of Antonio Dello Russo and his team.
“Our Cardiology – explains the general director of Ast Fermo, Roberto Grinta – is an excellence and a source of pride for the entire Fermo area. A department that continues to grow, in step with the new medical-specialist frontiers and with the requests of the users. I cannot but thank Paci and his entire team for the progress made. I also thank the general management of the University Hospital of the Marche and its professionals for the fruitful collaboration in the arrhythmology and haemodynamics fields, an area for which I would also like to thank the general management of Inrca”.
“We are investing heavily in the healthcare of Fermo, equipping this territory with the most modern technologies that, in the hands of competent professionals like those we have in our Regional Healthcare System, allow us to make great strides in the treatment of many pathologies – says the vice president of the Regional Council and Councilor for Health of the Marche Region, Filippo Saltamartini – A concrete response to the health needs of the people of the Marche. Thanks to our Regional Council, excellence is no longer concentrated in just a few territories, but is spread throughout every province”.
The new pacemaker, called Aveir Vr, is indicated for the treatment of patients with cardiac bradyarrhythmias.
Unlike traditional pacemakers that are implanted in a subcutaneous pocket under the chest and transmit impulses to the heart through wires called electrocatheters, this pacemaker is a completely intracardiac and therefore invisible device, weighing a few grams and with a volume of 1 cc, which is introduced through the femoral vein and fixed directly inside the right ventricle.
The new device, used for the first time in Fermo, is equipped with a battery that lasts more than 15 years, and has a design and fastening system that allow it to be removed and replaced with a new device at the end of the battery life.
“We are very pleased to have brought this important technological innovation to Fermo too – says Paci – Pacemaker therapy is well-established, present in Fermo for many years with approximately 180 patients treated each year, but there are cases in which the use of a traditional pacemaker is not indicated, for example because the patient is at high risk of infection or because normal venous access cannot be used.
The introduction of “wireless” pacemaker technology, called leadless, solves these problems and allows us to treat selected patients with an extremely innovative solution, also suitable for the youngest, given the longevity of the battery”.
The implantation went smoothly, lasted just under an hour and saw the collaboration between the Cardiology team of Fermo (composed of Alessandro Marziali with dedicated nurses and Arrhythmology of Ancona, which was among the first Italian centers to introduce the use of this device).
“This model of collaboration, which we have been experimenting for a few months for arrhythmology and for over a year for haemodynamics – Paci underlines – is extremely virtuous: it allows us to provide full assistance to Fermo patients, without having to transfer them to Ancona, increasing the experience of the internal team”.
