New York City’s New Mayor Plans To Receive First Three Salaries In Bitcoin

by time news

New York Mayor-elect Eric Adams intends to receive his salary in bitcoins during his first three months in his new position. About this he told в Twitter

“New York will become the center of the cryptocurrency industry and other fast-growing, innovative industries,” the politician promised. Democrat Adams, a former NYPD captain, was elected mayor of the city on November 2 and will take office on January 1, 2022.

His tweet was directed to Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, who had previously promised to receive his next paycheck in cryptocurrency. In August, Miami authorities, backed by Suarez, launched their own cryptocurrency called MiamiCoin to fund infrastructure projects and city events. In just two months, the cryptocurrency brought the municipal budget almost $ 8 million. According to Suarez, already in 2022 this amount will be at least $ 60 million, which will be used to solve social problems.

In an interview with Bloomberg this week, Adams, citing the Miami experience, said he would like to enter into a “friendly contest” with Suarez and do something similar in New York. He also said that he plans to look into the reasons hindering the growth in popularity in New York of cryptocurrencies in general and bitcoin in particular.

In August, the US regulator, the US Federal Securities and Exchange Commission, announced that it needed additional powers to regulate the cryptocurrency market, as this asset class is sometimes associated with fraud, scam and abuse. New York authorities are also tightening controls in this area: in October, Attorney General Laetitia James ordered two unregistered cryptocurrency lending platforms to shut down and requested transaction data from three other companies.
