The fair, an initiative of the Institute of Mexican Studies of the City University of New York (CUNY), seeks to “position the Spanish language in the United States through literature and culture” and will have as common threads the language and its relationship with identity and memory, oral and written memories and critical thinking, according to a statement.

The programming includes a night of poetry, spaces dedicated to investigative journalism and the evolution of audio as a narrative format, new proposals for Puerto Rican literature and special attention to the fiftieth anniversary of the 1973 coup in Chile.

Among the names confirmed by FILNYC are the Mexican writers Cristina Rivera Garza and Socorro Venegas and the Peruvian writer Gabriela Weiner, and the Mexican poet, translator and editor Jeannette Clariond, founder of Vaso Roto.

The Spanish Government will participate in the event, which aims to “strengthen the presence of Spanish literature in the United States, one of Spain’s main strategic markets in terms of exports,” according to the Ministry of Culture and Sports in a note.

The Spanish delegation includes the writers Kirmen Uribe, Luis García Montero, Yayo Herrero, Esther Paniagua, Mario Obrero, Eduardo Lago, Àngels Gregori and Ana Vidal, who will participate in different round tables on poetry, critical thinking or the climate emergency.

The editors Santiago Tobón (Sexto Piso), Paca Flores (Periférica), Magda Anglès (Las Afueras) and Juan Romero (Litera Libros) will also participate, who will take part in professional meetings and present their publications in an exhibition and sales area.

The event will include an evening of tribute to Lorca for the 125th anniversary of his birth, in which the poet and director of the Cervantes Institute, Luis García Montero, will participate, along with the poets Mario Obrero, Àngels Gregori and Kirmen Uribe, according to the note.
