A man who was with a weapon outside the office of the United Nations (UN) in New York was detained, RIA Novosti reported, citing police.

The police department confirmed to the agency that the man was in custody. The police did not tell about his motives and did not specify whether the incident was regarded as a terrorist attack.

The UN press service reported that none of the organization’s employees were in danger in connection with the incident. The official representative of the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, said that he was in the building.

Earlier today, the city police received a message that an armed man was at the UN office building. Militiamen cordoned off the street near the building and tried to talk to the man. UN staff who were in the building at the time were instructed to take cover.
