jpnn.comJAKARTA – YouTube is expanding its set of parental controls with a new feature that allows parents to connect their accounts with their teenagers’ accounts.

This way parents can gain insight into their children’s activities on YouTube.

Once connected, parents will be notified about their teen’s channel activity, including the number of uploads, subscriptions, and comments, but not the content.

They will also receive email notifications about events, such as new uploads or live broadcasts.

YouTube says connecting accounts will not affect YouTube’s algorithm in terms of what is shown to teens, because it is already personalized for the user.

Parents also cannot tell YouTube their child’s actual age through the act of linking accounts, because YouTube refers to the age that teens enter when signing up for YouTube.

However, parents will be able to be notified about new uploads on YouTube and YouTube Shorts, even if the videos are private or unlisted, and they will be able to see when a video’s privacy settings are changed.

Other social apps, including TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook have also previously launched parental controls involving supervised accounts linked to parents.
