A charity that supports homeless people in Auckland, New Zealand, has been handing out sweets filled with high doses of methamphetamine in its food parcels after a member of the public donated them.
The Auckland City Mission trust said it was already searching for around 400 people to locate the affected packages and recover the sweets.
Local authorities also said that three people who were affected required hospital treatment after consuming the sweets, but were later discharged.
Following initial analyses of the sweets, the New Zealand Drug Foundation confirmed that each sweet contained 300 times the usual dose and warned that it could be fatal.
Ben Birks Ang, a spokesman for the organisation, said using seemingly harmless products to smuggle drugs was a common tactic in international trafficking, and said more sweets could have been distributed across New Zealand.
