A magnitude 6.9 earthquake was recorded off the coast of New Zealand, with its epicenter in the Pacific Ocean, 180 kilometers northeast of the city of Gisborne, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
This was announced by Usgs, the American agency that manages the National Earthquake Information Center. Also issued a warning for a possible tsunami within a radius of 300 kilometers from the epicenter of the earthquake, the New Zealand agency for emergency management in a tweet invited those who live near the coast and felt a long or strong shock to move immediately towards inland areas and away from the ocean. In 2011, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake devastated the city of Christchurch, killing 185 people.
