  • The competition aims to foster community pride and showcase unique local stories.

The competition, launched as part of broader efforts to “restore pride in communities,” encourages applicants to highlight their “unique stories.” The first city to receive the honor will be announced for 2028, initiating a year-long program of cultural festivities.

What makes a City of Culture? The designation recognizes a location’s commitment to arts, heritage, and community engagement, aiming to boost tourism and local economies.

Newcastle council highlighted the borough’s rich cultural history, noting extensive celebrations in 2023 marking the 850th anniversary of the town’s royal charter. The council also pointed to past successes, including winning the overall prize at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom contest and the unveiling of a statue of Queen Elizabeth II in Queens Gardens the following year.

Beyond accolades, Newcastle-under-Lyme has invested in long-term community building through the creation of a Civic Pride Investment Fund. Council Leader Simon Tagg emphasized the area’s existing cultural assets, stating, “We already have award-winning jewels such as the Brampton Museum, Apedale Heritage Centre and the New Vic Theatre, and a culture of art and innovation which has been developed over centuries.”

Did you know? The UK City of Culture program is inspired by the European Capital of Culture initiative, designed to celebrate and promote European culture.

The panel will select three finalists, with two runners-up each receiving £250,000. The ultimate winner will embark on a year-long journey of cultural enrichment, showcasing the vibrancy and heritage of their community to the nation.
