The National Forensic Center is seeking a new employee with education and experience in language technology to join their group for software forensics. The position involves becoming a specialist in performing data analyzes and developing tools that can be applied in IT forensics and benefit criminal investigations. The NFC is a department of the Swedish Police Agency that leads, develops, and carries out forensic work in areas such as information technology, biological traces, chemistry, and drug analysis. The ideal candidate would have a civil engineering or master’s degree in a relevant field, good knowledge of Python, current experience with techniques within natural language processing (NLP), and knowledge of linguistics. The position requires ongoing contact with customers from other parts of the Police Authority to adapt development to their needs.

The National Forensic Center, NFC, is a department of the Swedish Police Agency. In close cooperation with the investigative activities, NFC leads, develops and carries out forensic work for successful crime fighting. The department operates in the areas of information technology, biological traces, chemistry and technology, and drug analysis. We have twelve operating locations, our largest lab and our department office are in Linköping.

At the Information Technology Section, we have a collective expertise in the IT forensic area that includes data, image, video, sound, sensor technology, electronics and mobile telephony. In addition to IT forensic investigations, we also work with investigations of handwriting, documents and banknotes. The section’s task is to develop new methods and tools for the entire Police Authority to simplify, enable and ensure the quality of the IT forensics carried out throughout the police. We are located in Linköping.

Job description

You will use your expertise in language technology to investigate, among other things, how the choice of password can relate to the background of the owner. In the role, you combine knowledge of the structure and structure of the Swedish language with technical competence and creativity to use different methods and techniques within natural language processing. You are part of a team where your role is to add expert knowledge to the IT forensic work by, among other things, developing tools that facilitate the recovery of passwords, as well as in other ways developing methods that assist the Swedish justice system.

Staying informed in the field by following the latest research and participating in trainings and conferences is a natural part of the position, and the work requires you to be persistent and methodical in exploring new findings. You will have ongoing contact with our customers from other parts of the Police Authority in order to adapt the development to their needs. During the initial part of the service, you will be trained in the forensic field and upon completion of the training will receive the title of forensic scientist.

Qualifications

We are looking for you who have:

  • civil engineering or master’s degree in a relevant field, for example with a focus on language technology, cognitive science, computer technology, AI and machine learning, Data Science
  • good knowledge of Python
  • current experience with techniques within Natural Language Processing (NLP)
  • knowledge of linguistics, mainly in syntax, morphology and semantics
  • very good knowledge of the Swedish language, both spoken and written

At NFC, you undergo an internal education/training with a subsequent examination before authorization to practice the forensic profession independently. The training takes place part-time for approximately two years. During the training period, you have the title forensic aspirant.
