NFL Clears Maracanã Stadium Field for Cowboys-Ravens Game in Rio de Janeiro

The NFL insists playing conditions at Maracanã Stadium are ready for Sunday’s matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens in Rio de Janeiro, despite public warnings from the NFL Players Association regarding turf stability following record local rainfall.

The NFL’s first game in Rio de Janeiro arrives amid a dramatic global expansion that has brought nine games across seven countries and four continents this season. But as the Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens prepare to meet on Sunday afternoon, the playing surface has dominated the buildup to Week 3.

League Officials Insist Maracanã Stadium Field is Safe

Amid public speculation that the turf at Maracanã Stadium would not withstand the rigors of an NFL contest, league leadership offered a sharp pushback. NFL Field Director Nick Pappas told reporters in Brazil that there was no cause for alarm after conducting joint inspections.

Pappas noted that he reviewed the grass alongside an independent inspector and a representative from the players union. The venue has also been subject to record rainfall, marking the wettest period in Rio since the city began tracking precipitation in 1997.

“We have an independent inspector that comes in, walks with myself, walks with a member of the NFLPA. They were here yesterday. Performed that test. Things check out. We’ve made additional improvements to the field that we think were helpful.”

Union Spotlights Traction Concerns and Broader Expansion Risks

The reassuring tone from league officials contrasts with a detailed warning issued by the players union. In a lengthy statement posted to social media, NFLPA executive director JC Tretter highlighted the union’s perspective after union experts spent days examining the turf on the ground in Brazil.

While union engineers agreed that the surface had avoided major injury-level risks, they warned that a loose and patchy pitch severely compromises playability and the quality of the game. According to the union’s assessment, the grass required immediate intervention to secure adequate stability.

“Based on our experts’ assessment, the field needed better traction and stability. They recommended reinforced stitching to help the surface hold together and brought in equipment to reinforce as much of the field as possible before the game. Our experts will remain engaged and continue evaluating conditions through kickoff.”

Tretter also tied the current situation to previous overseas hiccups, noting that two of the three games played in Brazil have suffered from surface deficiencies, including the slick conditions that plagued the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers at Corinthians Arena in São Paulo two years ago.

Team Focus Shifts to the Field as Lamar Jackson and Dak Prescott Prep

On the team side, players and coaches have largely deflected the external noise. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer expressed total confidence as his squad prepared to inspect the stadium in person.

Brian Schottenheimer said from Rio de Janeiro on Friday that he has no doubts the field will be in great shape, noting that people are working tirelessly to ensure it is, and that while they have other plans if needed, their players will be ready.

Quarterback Dak Prescott echoed that sentiment, brushing off the media discourse surrounding the pitch with a nod to his upbringing. If it’s the surface we’re going to play on, let’s go do it Prescott said, adding that he had previously played and been tackled on much worse surfaces.

Meanwhile, Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson has embraced the historic international stage while maintaining a lighthearted approach to his first visit to South America.

“Estou muito feliz de poder jogar no Brasil e no Maracanã. Me sinto privilegiado de poder jogar em um lugar que tem o Cristo de braços abertos para mim.”

On the gridiron, both teams enter the matchup holding identical 1-1 records. Baltimore is looking to bounce back from a 24-17 defeat against the New Orleans Saints, while Dallas arrives following a comfortable 37-20 victory over the Washington Commanders. Analytics models point toward a high-scoring affair, with the over/under sitting at 52.5 points and the Ravens opening as 3.5-point favorites on CBS and Paramount+.
