NFL Suspends Adrian Hill And Jeff Seeman For Unprofessional Conduct

Following separate Week 4 incidents involving unprofessional conduct toward players, line judge Jeff Seeman has received a two-game suspension from the NFL, and referee Adrian Hill has been banned for one game. Ramon George, the league’s vice president of officiating, issued the disciplinary actions as rare mid-season penalties against game officials.

The National Football League rarely disciplines on-field officials with suspensions, but a tumultuous slate of Week 4 games prompted swift action from the league office. Disciplinary measures involving suspensions for officials are uncommon, with prior instances including umpire Roy Ellison receiving a one-game administrative leave and a one-game check fine in 2018 for confronting a Bills player, alongside side judge Rob Vernatchi being suspended in 2015 due to an 18-second game clock runoff error during a Steelers-Chargers game. Ellison was suspended in 2013 for using profanity against a player; it is exceptionally rare for multiple officials to be suspended in the same season. The league announced the penalties on Monday following a weekend that also saw head coaches flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after heated verbal exchanges with officiating crews.

Jeff Seeman Suspended Two Games After Sideline Clash With Trey McBride

During the Arizona Cardinals’ 36-24 loss to the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium on October 4, 2026, line judge Jeff Seeman became embroiled in a verbal altercation with Cardinals tight end Trey McBride.

This kind of behavior from an official towards a player is unacceptable. Players are consistently held accountable when roles are reversed. We expect the NFL to hold officials to the same standard.

JC Tretter, NFL Players Association Executive Director

Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur addressed the incident the following day. It’s a tough one for me. You hate to see it for obvious reasons. I don’t need to go further than that, but I do want to give the man a little bit of grace too, LaFleur told reporters, adding that he knows Seeman personally as a good man and that it was unfortunate it happened and cannot happen.

Adrian Hill Penalized After Altercation With Eric Wilson

In a separate game during the same weekend, referee Adrian Hill was penalized with a one-game suspension for his encounter with Minnesota Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson. During the Vikings’ 15-10 victory over the visiting Miami Dolphins at U.S. Bank Stadium, a first-quarter play was whistled dead midway through the quarter after a third-and-10 play was whistled dead because of a Minnesota penalty by Dallas Turner.

When Wilson tried to help him up and offered a hand, the official wanted no part of it, jumped to his feet, and began pointing and yelling at Wilson to get away and get back to his team’s huddle. Down judge Danny Short separated Wilson and Hill during the incident.

That was funny, honestly. I ended up apologizing to him and explained the situation. He was cool about it. He understood what was going on. He just said he didn’t want us fighting, me and [Gordon]. He said he was just trying to break us up.

Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell also defended Hill’s reputation, telling reporters that he didn’t get a great view of the play but considers Adrian to be a really good official who does a really good job during a fast-moving moment that can hopefully be put behind them.

NFL Penalties Rise as Tensions Mount Between Players and Officials

The disciplinary actions taken against Seeman and Hill highlight a broader weekend of mounting tensions between game participants and officiating crews. Across Week 4 matchups, a total of 235 penalties were called according to NFLPenalties.com.
