NFL Teams Pledge $1.5 Million in Relief for Devastating Texas Floods

The National Football League and its teams are stepping up to provide substantial financial aid following catastrophic flooding in the Texas Hill Country, with a collective commitment exceeding $1.5 million. The devastating floods, triggered by heavy rainfall on July 4th, have resulted in at least 120 confirmed deaths and left over 160 individuals unaccounted for, according to officials.

Catastrophic Flooding Impacts Texas Hill Country

The Guadalupe River overflowed its banks, unleashing torrents of water that swept through Kerr County and the broader Texas Hill Country. The impact was particularly severe on Camp Mystic, an all-girls summer camp, where at least 27 campers and counselors were lost. The scale of the disaster prompted immediate calls for assistance, and the NFL was among the first to respond.

Initial Response: Texans and Cowboys Lead the Way

The Houston Texans were the first NFL team to announce a donation, pledging $500,000 on Saturday, July 5th. “We are heartbroken by the loss and damage that our neighbors in the Texas Hill Country have endured,” the McNair family said in a statement. “We are especially devastated to hear about the children who are still missing and we are praying they are reunited with their families soon.”

The Dallas Cowboys quickly followed suit on Sunday, July 6th, contributing an additional $500,000. “Our hearts are heavy as we witness the devastation and loss of life…especially for the young girls and their families,” the team stated. The NFL Foundation then joined the Texans and Cowboys, adding another $500,000 on behalf of the league, bringing the initial total to $1.5 million.

Expanding Support: Falcons, Chiefs, Vikings Join Relief Efforts

Further demonstrating the league’s commitment, several other teams and owners pledged significant support in the days following the initial donations. On July 10th, the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, representing the Atlanta Falcons, contributed $500,000. “We hold the people of Texas…close in our thoughts as the devastating floods have brought hardship and heartbreak to so many,” the foundation said.

A particularly poignant donation came from Clark Hunt, owner of the Kansas City Chiefs, who tragically lost a relative, 9-year-old Janie Hunt, in the flooding at Camp Mystic. Hunt, along with partners from Austin FC, Houston Dynamo FC, and MLS, donated $500,000 on July 9th. “Our family is devastated by the tragedy in Central Texas,” Hunt stated. “Our hearts go out to those grieving…and the far-too-many who have lost friends, neighbors, and loved ones.”

The Minnesota Vikings also stepped forward on July 9th, donating $500,000 to support rescue and recovery efforts. “We are deeply saddened by the continued devastation and loss of life…and can’t imagine the pain so many are experiencing,” said the team’s owners, Mark, Zygi and Leonard Wilf.

The outpouring of support from NFL teams underscores the league’s commitment to communities impacted by disaster, providing crucial resources for both immediate relief and long-term recovery.
