NIA Uncovers Evidence of ‘Hit Teams’ in Raids Targeting Banned PFI in Kerala

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has intensified its crackdown on the banned Popular Front of India (PFI), conducting raids across Kerala and uncovering evidence of a conspiracy to eliminate opponents through organized “hit teams.”

The NIA conducted searches at nine locations on Wednesday, focusing on the homes of PFI office bearers and supporters linked to previous cases registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in 2022. These raids yielded significant evidence, including mobile phones, laptops, and data storage devices, bolstering the agency’s investigation into the PFI’s alleged anti-national activities.

PFI’s Covert Training Programs

According to a press release, the NIA alleges that the PFI, while ostensibly engaged in yoga training and sports education, was secretly training selected activists for violent purposes. A senior official stated that the training was specifically designed to prepare individuals to “eliminate opponents.” This revelation adds a disturbing layer to the accusations against the organization, which has been accused of a range of offenses including collecting funds for anti-national activities and providing weapons training to youth.

Expanding Scope of Investigation

The raids targeted locations in Chavakkad, Palakkad, Malappuram, Perumbavoor, Paravoor, and Vaytila, beginning at 5 am. Investigators focused on individuals believed to have assisted those previously accused in UAPA-related cases. While acknowledging that not everyone subjected to the searches will necessarily face charges, the NIA emphasized that only those demonstrably involved in anti-national activities will be included in the final charge sheet.

Evidence of Organized Wings

The NIA’s investigation has reportedly uncovered evidence of a highly structured organizational framework within the PFI. According to the agency, the PFI established specialized wings, including a Reporters Wing, a Physical and Arms Training Wing, and Service Teams – also referred to as “Hit Teams.” These teams, the NIA alleges, were specifically tasked with identifying and eliminating rivals.

The agency is building a case that the PFI actively engaged in preparing lists of individuals to be targeted and subsequently attacked. This alleged pattern of behavior underscores the seriousness of the charges against the banned organization.

The ongoing investigation highlights the continued efforts to dismantle the PFI’s network and bring its alleged perpetrators to justice. The NIA’s findings suggest a deliberate and calculated effort to undermine national security, and the agency is committed to pursuing all available leads to ensure accountability.
