NIA wants Varavar Rao jailed

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has asked the Bombay High Court to order the return of poet and activist Varavara Rao, who was arrested in the Bhimakorgaon case, to jail. Rao’s plea for extension of interim bail was heard by the investigating agency during the hearing. Earlier in the day, the high court had extended bail till December 20.

Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai has filed a written clinical report on Varavara Rao’s condition in the Bombay High Court. According to the report, his health condition is normal and he is able to perform daily activities. The 82-year-old was examined by various medical experts, the hospital said. In February this year, the court granted Rao six months’ medical bail. Bail was later extended. The court allowed him until December 20 to return to jail.

Meanwhile, Sudha Bhardwaj, a lawyer and activist in the Bhima Koregaon case, was granted bail by the Bombay High Court in the first week of December. Stan Swamy, a Jesuit priest, died at a private hospital on July 5 this year while awaiting medical bail. The other accused in the case are in custody as trial prisoners.
