Niall Morgan Wins First Tyrone Championship Title for Edendork

Niall Morgan kicked a 45-metre free deep into stoppage time to secure Edendork’s first-ever Tyrone Senior Football Championship title with a 1-14 to 1-13 replay victory over Errigal Ciarán at O’Neills Healy Park on October 23, 2026.

Edendork St. Malachy’s claimed their maiden O’Neill Cup in dramatic fashion after Errigal Ciarán had edged ahead in the closing moments. Peter Harte had put the pre-match favourites in front with his fifth score in the 62nd minute, looking to seal a third title in five seasons for the Dunmoyle side. But a late foul on Con Kilpatrick on the 45-metre line handed Edendork one final chance.

Niall Morgan Scores Late Free to Win Replay

Stepping up with virtually the last kick of the game, Tyrone goalkeeper Morgan struck sweetly to raise a triumphant orange flag, converting the free to snatch a 1-14 to 1-13 victory. The dramatic climax completed a gripping replay that followed an initial stalemate five days earlier, where Darren McCurry had secured a second chance for the underdogs with a late two-pointer.

Errigal Ciarán had held the upper hand during the opening quarter, driven by McCurry’s Tyrone teammate Cormac Quinn facing early pressure as Darren McCurry hit four points from play. Errigal responded through Odhran Robinson, Shea McDermott, Peter Harte, and Peter Óg McCartan to edge ahead 0-05 to 0-04, before Padraig McGirr slid the ball low past Niall Morgan following a well-worked 20th-minute move involving McCartan and Harte.

Darren McCurry Penalty Helps Edendork Lead at Halftime

Trailing by four points after McGirr’s goal, Edendork turned the momentum before the interval with an unanswered 1-3 burst. Fiachra Nelis intercepted a kick-out from Errigal goalkeeper Darragh McAnenly to release Luke Ferguson, who drew a foul from McAnenly inside the area. Darren McCurry expertly dispatched the penalty into the bottom corner of the net, helping send the St Malachy’s side into the dressing room with a 1-8 to 1-6 lead.

Harte restored parity early in the second half with a brace of scores, but Edendork centre-back Ben Cullen provided an inspirational spark, powering through to land two crucial points that put his side ahead 1-10 to 1-8. Substitute Ruairi Canavan added fresh energy to the Errigal attack with a pair of scores, setting the stage for a tense, score-for-score finish that culminated in Morgan’s decisive intervention.

Historic Significance for St Malachy’s Club

The full-time whistle sparked emotional scenes at Healy Park, with supporters storming the pitch to celebrate the greatest day in the 94-year history of the parish club. Edendork’s triumph marks the second consecutive year that the fiercely competitive Tyrone Senior Football Championship has produced a maiden champion, following reigning champions Loughmacrory’s breakthrough win in their first appearance in a decider.

Reflecting on the emotional milestone after playing his 20th season as a senior player for his local parish, Morgan highlighted what the victory means beyond his previous inter-county success, which includes an All-Ireland title in 2021 and two All-Stars.

This is the pinnacle. No matter where I go in life, it’s Edendork first. Edendork, Tyrone, Ulster, Ireland. It doesn’t matter. It’s Edendork. People used to say, where are you from? They used to say, a wee place outside Dungannon. Now it seems like a pretty big place. We just need to get a load of houses built and get all these people into living there and we’d become a super club.

Morgan also paid tribute to the older generations of the club who laid the groundwork for the community, recalling his father’s words about the monumental physical effort required to establish the club’s grounds.

Daddy’s words to me were, you don’t understand, and I don’t. You think you do, but for men like that, that turned the pitch 90 degrees to change its direction, took out electric poles, bought land. All you have to do is look around. This is it.

Ulster Club Championship Progression

With the Tyrone crown secured, Edendork now advances to the Ulster Club Championship. As one of the county’s smallest clubs, the newly crowned Tyrone champions will face Down champions Clonduff in a first-round clash at Pairc Esler next weekend.
