(ANSA) – MANAGUA, 12 AUGUST – Three plainclothes police officers have been kidnapping the administration employees of the cathedral of Matagalpa, in Nicaragua, since the early hours of the morning. The complaint on X comes from Haydeé Castillo, an activist in exile. In addition to the cathedral staff being held hostage and forced to hand over money, the plainclothes officers also ordered “the priests of the order of the Friars of the Renewal to leave the country”, Castillo confirmed. The legal status of the Caritas of the diocese of Matagalpa has also been cancelled, which continues to be the target of attacks by the government of President Daniel Ortega, following the arrest and expulsion of its bishop, Monsignor Rolando Álvarez. The closure of the Caritas of Matagalpa and the kidnapping of the staff of the local cathedral come just a few days after seven priests of the local diocese were arrested and expelled from the Central American country.
