Nicholas Evans was an English journalist, television producer, screenwriter and author, who died at the age of 72. Evans was born in 1950 in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England. He studied law at Oxford University but in practice he was engaged in journalism and worked as a television reporter and scriptwriter. He was married to singer-songwriter Charlotte Gordon Cumming.

For a time, Evans lived in Africa on behalf of the VSO, the volunteer service for overseas charity work.

Evans became especially famous thanks to his book “The Horse Whisperer”. This is a novel that was published in 1995 and deals with a farmer, who has a special ability to treat injured horses, and is hired to help a girl who had a road accident with her horse get back to their normal life.

In 1998, the movie The Horse Whisperer, based on Evans’ book, was released, directed and starring Robert Durford. The film received positive reviews from audiences and critics, and its theme song: “A Soft Place To Fall” was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Original Song category.

Evans’ book was number 10 on the US bestseller list for 1995, according to the New York Times.

Besides The Horse Whisperer, other books he wrote were translated into Hebrew: The Loop (1998), In the Heart of the Fire (1999) and The Watershed (2005).

The plots of Evans’ books often take place in the open spaces of America, such as the snowy Rocky Mountains in Montana. Although Evans was born and raised in England, the westerns, Indians and cowboys of America are the fertile ground of his books.

As an adult, he spent an extended period in the United States as a journalist, covering the 1976 presidential election campaign, and spent several weeks in Montana, where he met the characters who inspired Tom Booker, the hero of his book The Horse Whisperer.
