Nicholas Hoult’s Blonde Transformation: From Superman Press to ‘How To Rob A Bank’
The question of whether blondes have more fun has taken a backseat to the practical application for actor nicholas Hoult, who has embraced bleach blonde hair for much of this year for his role in the upcoming 2026 film, How To Rob A Bank.
hoult recently shared the story behind the change with GQ, revealing a collaborative decision with director David Leitch. The actor explained that he had previously considered bleaching his hair for other roles, but never felt the timing or tone was quite right. “You no what, it was something that I had considered for roles before, but never felt like it was quite right for the feel of the tone of the job or whatever it might be,” he said.
The idea gained traction during discussions with Leitch about the character and his motivations. As they began prepping for the film, Leitch posed the question: “How would you feel about bleaching your hair?” Hoult, known for his willingness to physically transform for roles – previously shaving his head to play Lex Luthor – was promptly receptive.
“And it was funny because I’d had this instinctual thing at one point about the character where I was like, ‘Maybe [bleached hair] is something physically I could do to transform and use with this character,'” Hoult recounted. “So I said yes right away.” He even expedited the process, getting his hair bleached just two days later at the salon of his wife’s aunt, wanting to test the look before fully committing. “Let’s do it now and we’ll see, because maybe it looks bad and we don’t want to use it,” he thoght at the time.
Ultimately, the blonde aesthetic resonated with the film’s vision and the character’s portrayal. “But I did it and we felt like it was right for the aesthetic of the film and the character, and I kind of like it,” Hoult admitted, playfully referencing his newfound affinity for the look with a “I’ve got my Madonna Blonde Ambition T-shirt on.I’m all about that blonde life now.”
The transformation has proven triumphant, as Hoult continues to sport the blonde hair even four months after production on How To Rob A Bank reportedly wrapped. He’s not alone in the trend of actors experimenting with blonde hair; Josh Hutcherson recently went blonde for The Beekeeper, and Dylan O’Brien underwent a similar change a few years ago.
How To Rob A Bank centers on a crew of bank robbers who document their heists on social media while evading law enforcement. The film is directed by David Leitch, known for his stylish action films including Atomic blonde, Deadpool 2, Bullet Train, and The Fall Guy. Audiences can anticipate a blend of stunt work and comedic elements, consistent with Leitch’s previous projects.
The cast includes Zoë Kravitz (reuniting with Hoult after Mad Max: Fury Road), Anna Sawai (fresh off her success in Shogun), Pete Davidson, Rhenzy Feliz, John C. Reilly, and Christian Slater.
As fans await the film’s release next fall, Hoult shared that embracing the change has been “fun just to do something different,” even beyond the demands of the role. He’s been inundated with messages from people inspired to try a similar transformation, and encourages others to “shake it up” and “change your hair.” “Why not?” he said. “Hair is prone to grow back, you know!”
