SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis agreed to relinquish his executive duties temporarily to face GUNTHER in an in-ring match at SummerSlam 2026. The matchup follows a chaotic contract signing on SmackDown and escalating physical altercations across WWE programming.

The road to SummerSlam 2026 took an unexpected turn when SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis prepared to step back into the squared circle. During an episode of SmackDown, Raw General Manager Adam Pearce presided over a tense contract signing between Aldis and GUNTHER to make their match official. Under the rules outlined by Pearce, Aldis is barred from wrestling as an active WWE superstar while holding his administrative position. Aldis relinquished his GM duties the moment he signed on the dotted line.
The Ring General talked a whole lot of trash when it was his time to sign. He said Nick is jealous of him for being a super rich WWE superstar, which is the kind of status that Aldis could never attain in his disappointing wrestling career. It will be the best night of Aldis’ life when he gets to share the ring with the greatness of GUNTHER.
Aldis responded by saying he could tell last week that GUNTHER doesn’t want any of this. Nick has nothing to lose at SummerSlam, because he hasn’t wrestled in three years.
Nick Aldis is set to make his WWE in-ring debut at SummerSlam, as the SmackDown General Manager is set to face Gunther at the Biggest Party of the Summer. While Nick Aldis has only portrayed an authority figure on WWE TV, the British Superstar is an accomplished pro wrestler. In fact, Nick Aldis is a former TNA World Champion, 2-time NWA World Champion, and even wrestled in a top match at the inaugural All In.
Raw General Manager Adam Pearce will once again steer the ship tonight on SmackDown in place of Nick Aldis. Last week, Gunther attacked SmackDown’s GM at the end of the show, setting up Pearce as tonight’s substitute and leaving him with a ton to address.
The high-stakes collision builds directly on recent chaos involving top roster talent. SummerSlam opponents CM Punk and Cody Rhodes teamed up to defeat Gunther and Sami Zayn in a tag team match on Saturday Night’s Main Event at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, but they had major help from SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis. By virtue of their win, Punk and Rhodes prevented Gunther and Zayn from being added to their WWE Championship match at SummerSlam.
Late in the match, Gunther hit Rhodes with a championship belt and a powerbomb. He went for the pin, but Aldis pulled the official out of the ring. An irate Gunther yelled at Aldis, but Punk used the opportunity to hit Gunther with a GTS. Punk then dragged Rhodes onto Gunther. At that point, referee Charles Robinson, who had been taken out earlier, gained his bearings and made the three count. Commentator Wade Barrett later noted that Aldis is only relinquishing his GM job temporarily and will resume executive duties following the two-night PLE event.
Magnus in TNA
The upcoming bout marks Aldis’s return to the ring after spending time as an authority figure. Aldis was an active competitor on the independent wrestling scene until he got the call to be a General Manager in 2023. Starting his career off as a UK Gladiator, the future husband of Mickie James got his big break as Magnus in TNA. Magnus earned quite a name for himself as a member of The British Invasion, alongside fellow countrymen Rob Terry and Doug Williams. He’d win his first TNA Tag Team Title with Doug Williams. The British Invasion would also collect the IWGP Tag Team Titles. As Magnus’ stock rose, he won his second TNA Tag Team Title with Samoa Joe. Magnus skyrocketed to the Main Event scene, feuding with AJ Styles over the TNA Title.
Speaking on a recent episode of “Hall of Fame,” Booker T shared his thoughts on the former NWA World Heavyweight Champion stepping back in the ring for the first time in three years:
“I like it, man. I really do, because Nick Aldis wasn’t ready to step away from the ring when he came over to WWE … when you get an opportunity like Nick Aldis got, to be the General Manager of ‘Raw,’ man, you take that and run with it. And the thing is, honestly, he’s got like that James Bond feel. He’s perfect for the job … He seems very believable when he talks to guys. And now you’re going to believe him stepping back in the ring because I’m sure he’s been in the gym and I’m sure he’s been training.” Booker T, via Wrestling Inc.

Former World Heavyweight Champion GUNTHER had several verbal confrontations with SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis. At the SummerSlam kickoff show, the two men brawled, with Triple H announcing that they will be fighting each other at the PLE.
