Nico Denz (BORA-hansgrohe) signed the victory in the twelfth fraction of the Giro d’Italia 2023, 179 kilometers between Bra and Rivoli. The German, won in a sprint of three from a much larger original break, which bled to death due to his terrible cooperation.

A collective of 30 riders filtered into the breakaway, with almost all the best hunters on the startlist and a quality composition: Van Wilder, Baudin, V. Paret-Peintre, Oldani, Battistella, Pronskiy, Scaroni, Sutterlin, Denz, Konrad, Lastra, Bettiol, Fortunato, Covili, Gabburo, Tonelli, Huys, Berwick, Frigo, Williams, Hessmann, Kuss, Rubio, Stojnić, Matthews, Pedersen, Ghebreigzabier, Mollema, Skujins and Formolo.

However, the development would not be harmonious as many believed. The lack of cohesion caused moves from afar that broke the group due to their gaps in understanding.

Denz, Berwick, Tonelli and Skujiņš took a wide advantage over the rest of the group, which was over 2’30” at 70 km from the sentence. This with the mitigation that the persecution train continued in disorder and eliminating each other due to their unwillingness to collaborate.

The result was that a trio with Bettiol, Baudin and Scaroni broke up, with twenty seconds ahead of other cyclists such as Oldani, Formolo or Frigo, but with the common factor that they all no longer had any chance of winning the stage. Through attacks and counterattacks they gave a solid lesson on what not to do in such a breakout.

The quartet had a first point to play for the victory, the ascent to Colle Braida (2nd), whose greatest hardness was its last 4 km at 8%. There the generosity of Skujins allowed Tonelli to be eliminated. Some relays gave Berwick, a climber par excellence, while Denz resisted at his limits, since he was the least expert in that terrain.

Despite everything, he managed to crown with his two adventure companions and thus they headed for a 28 km journey that should lead them to a resolution between the three of them.

Denz tried his luck at 12 km and put Berwick, the least rolling of the three, to suffer. In any case, the Australian was willful and made the wear and tear to link back with his head. The unsuccessful movement invited the trident to limit itself to the relay and decide the victory in the sprint.

There, the German from BORA made the difference with an impressive sprint that no one could overcome, not even Skujins, who had been heavily favored prior to this day. Relevant victory for Denz, who had been second in a stage in 2018 and brings the first success to the team defending the title.

Tomorrow, the first high mountain day, initially agreed on 199 kilometers starting from Borgofranco d’Ivrea and arriving at Crans Montana. However, there is the possibility that it will be cut due to inclement weather. Pronto You can access more details and predictions in the PREVIOUS SECTION.
