The statements delivered by Nicolás Petro as part of the agreement made with the Prosecutor’s Office, gave way to a political storm that leaves the president Gustavo Petro and his electoral campaign of 2022, in the eye of the authorities.
Those same declarations marked the beginning of a new stage of the process and in this, the role of the defense of the son of the president will be essential in the delivery of testimonies and evidence that may be necessary in what follows the case.
For that reason, The RCN FM spoke with the lawyer David Telekiin charge of the defense of Nicolás Petro and who, from the beginning of the talk, made it clear that his defendant is proof in itself.

“Look, I want to be very clear and emphatic on this, the doctor Nicolás Petro Burgos is proof in itself, because he is a witness. Sometimes they are being required to bring documents or videos or recordings and those people when they meet do not record themselves,” said lawyer Teleki.
In this same sense, the lawyer assured that what he has said and is going to say Nicolás Petro “is charged with grace, because his own testimony is very powerful, very powerful” and clarified that these statements now have to be corroborated by the General Prosecutor’s Office, “the Prosecutor’s Office has a very technical and specialized apparatus in finding and corroborating what my defendant is saying. So let’s not make demands beyond common sense.”
Without giving details of the evidence they have, Teleki assured that it is necessary to let the investigation develop and that his defendant provide more information, “I tell you that the most important thing is what he realizes; he had a very important position in the presidential campaign of the coast. We are not talking about a parrot, but someone who had the confidence to take charge of the Atlantic coast in the presidential campaign.”
That same position that he defines as privileged would be, according to Teleki, the main reason why you should believe Nicolás Petro.
Money in the presidential campaign
A large part of the relevance of this case, in addition to the fact that it speaks of the president’s son, is the possibility of income of illicit money to the 2022 campaign. For this reason, the lawyer Teleki was asked about that part of the statement delivered by Nicolás Petro and assured that in what follows in the process, his testimony would be about what happened with that individual on the Colombian Caribbean coast.
“The new fact that Nicolás is going to talk about is the financing of the campaign in the Atlantic coast region. It should be understood that when we are talking about this topic it is about how the resources arrived and how they were spent. The truth is that yes, indeed, he has given information that talks about these situations, but for the moment I cannot give more circumstances of time and place, nor people, nor names, but obviously it is giving an account of how, in what way the presidential campaign was financed and spent”, replied the lawyer.
To his response, the lawyer Teleki added that “in Nicolás Petro’s statements everything points to an issue of ceilings and the origin of campaign financing.”
Within the possible irregular financing of the presidential campaign, the lawyer Teleki was askedfor the amount that would have been allocated for that purpose and assured that the exact figure is not yet available, “we are in that process. He has to make an evaluation, a data collection.”
In order to really know the total amount that had entered the presidential campaign, the attorney for Nicolás Petro assured that it was also necessary to review “how the events were organized on the Atlantic coast, what the money was spent on, who was paid, the platform, the electoral witnesses and all those resources” and added that the Prosecutor’s Office will have to evaluate how this enters into an analysis compared to what already officially, the campaign would have declared.

Finally, the lawyer David Teleki made it clear that Nicolás Petro will maintain his statements until the end, that he will not back down and that he will come if required by any competent authority “he is a witness. It will be a witness. We still do not have a call or appointment from any other authority, but if you are summoned to deliver your statement as a witness in the process, we are ready”.
