Nicolás Petro’s reaction to statements by prosecutor Barbosa about his judicial process

After learning of the recent statements by Attorney General Francisco Barbosa about the investigation being carried out against him, Nicolás Petro Burgos, son of the President of the Republic, once again launched strong statements against the head of the prosecuting body and even called him ignorant, through of a message on social networks.

Prosecutor Barbosa stated this Friday that the process of Nicolás Petro, who is being investigated for alleged illicit enrichment and money laundering, is going “very quickly” and that there could even be a conviction in October 2024.

These statements were not very liked by Petro Burgos, since through a message on his X account, formerly Twitter, he stated that these statements by the prosecutor are “dangerous” and that, in turn, he is being violated the right to due process.

“Dangerous statements by Prosecutor Barbosa about my case. “He ignores and violates my due process and my right to defense completely, and rightly so the systematic violations of my procedural guarantees by his officials,” Petro Burgos began by stating.

Prosecutor Barbosa had assured in dialogue with Blu that the conviction and conclusion of said case could occur between September and October of next year, taking into account that the accusation by the Prosecutor’s Office will be made on January 11.

“The case of Nicolás Petro is that he is already going to a preparatory hearing, in the case of the accusation that will be made by the Prosecutor’s Office on January 11 (…) It would be something important for the country, speaking of the opportunity of response,” declared the prosecutor on the station.

To this, the president’s son responded strongly to the prosecutor, labeling him as ignorant and saying that Barbosa does not actually have any knowledge of the status of the judicial process.

“In addition, he is ignorant, he has no idea what state my judicial process is in,” Petro Burgos wrote on his networks.

Petro Burgos is currently being investigated for allegedly receiving nearly $1 billion from former drug trafficker Manuel Santander Lopesierra, known as the ‘Marlboro’ man, and contractor Alfonso del Cristo ‘El Turco’ Hilsaca, a man linked to paramilitaries.

“Prosecutor Barbosa pressures the judges with press headlines,” concluded the president’s son in his message on X.

In the case, in which Day Vásquez, Petro Burgos’ ex-wife, is also being investigated, it was learned that the Prosecutor’s Office signed a principle of opportunity with her, who was the one who revealed the entire scandal from the beginning.

According to the entity, Vásquez will receive a benefit of total immunity for two years in exchange for revealing all the information she knows against her ex-husband and at least seven other alleged suspects.

For its part, as far as Petro Burgos is concerned, he must wait for the estimated date revealed by prosecutor Barbosa to continue with his judicial process in the midst of the entire scandal that began at the beginning of 2023.
