A new president in the Senate. Nicolas Rabemananjara officially took charge of the Senate yesterday following the accession of General Richard Ravalomanana as interim head of state.
Richard Ravalomanana, appointed president of the Senate after the dismissal of Herimanana Razafimahefa, became interim head of state on October 27 after a positive opinion from the High Constitutional Court (HCC) which approved his request to assume presidential functions following his accession to the head of the Upper House.
According to the Senate’s rules of procedure, the eldest vice president is responsible for temporarily serving as Senate President. Nicolas Rabemananjara, previously vice-president of the Senate, from the province of Fianarantsoa, finds himself propelled to this position a few days before the next presidential election.
