She was a supermodel, but now Carla Bruni had a first on the catwalk. Nicolas Sarkozy‘s wife was part of the Victoria’s Secret fashion show.
Carla Bruni has been in the spotlight since she was 19, rose to the ranks of supermodels in the 1990s and later enjoyed great success as a musician. The all-rounder also became the political first lady in 2008 when she married the then French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
At the age of 56, Carla Bruni was able to celebrate another debut: she walked the catwalk as a Victoria’s Secret Angel for the first time. On Tuesday, the American underwear brand returned with its legendary fashion show after a six-year break. Numerous supermodels made their winged comeback, including Tyra Banks, Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Candice Swanepoel and Behati Prinsloo.
And Carla Bruni was also at the mega event in New York. She floated over the catwalk in a black corset, transparent tights with a floral lace pattern, glittering high heels and the typical Victoria’s Secret angel wings.
In a post on Instagram, the 56-year-old thanked the lingerie label “for giving me new wings at my venerable age.” The musician’s fans were enthusiastic about the performance, and Carla Bruni was showered with compliments in the comments on the post.
Since 1995, the Victoria’s Secret fashion show has been one of the biggest catwalk events of the year. High-profile models walked the catwalk, while equally big stars provided the musical accompaniment. But in 2018 the spectacle was over.
At the time, it was reported that the fashion brand was suffering from a decline in sales, and the last edition also had the worst ratings in the show’s history. Criticism of the concept also became increasingly louder. The lack of diverse models was criticized. There was also headwind at the time for the statement by then Chief Marketing Officer Ed Razek that he did not want to hire transsexual and curvy models. He later apologized and resigned from his post.
